Before the ERTMS was conceived, almost every single country used to have its own Automatic Train Protection System (ATP). Normally these systems were not compatible with each other and thus crossing a signalling area border meant that trains needed to implement several on-board ATP devices, each of which was self-functioning.

ERTMS, which stands for ‘European Railway Traffic Management System’, is the European standard for the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and command and control systems. It creates an interoperable railway system in Europe that is more efficient and safer. A key component of ERTMS is the on-board signalling equipment (referred to as the European Train Control System or ETCS).
