Before the ERTMS was conceived, almost every single country used to have its own Automatic Train Protection System (ATP). Normally these systems were not compatible with each other and thus crossing a signalling area border meant that trains needed to implement several on-board ATP devices, each of which was self-functioning.

Achieving the interoperability of the European rail system requires many measures to unify technical solutions as well as regulations in each Member State.

ERTMS, which stands for ‘European Railway Traffic Management System’, is the European standard for the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and command and control systems. It creates an interoperable railway system in Europe that is more efficient and safer.
